The Hybrid Battle Royal
Honda has announced the price tag on the new Insight. The Insight is much cheaper than the Prius by a few grand. Costing a few grand less earns the Insight the honor and distinction of cheapest hybrid in the U.S.
The Insight offers an ECO Assist system which enhances fuel economy further by controlling acceleration rates and helping the driver drive learn how to drive more economically. The ECO socring helps the drive to have a system that allows for the best fuel economy, which is related back to the operator in the form of a miles per gallon readout. At the heart of this hybrid is the latest integrated motor assist system, also known as the IMA® system. Th IMA system is cheaper to manufacture, lighter than the original, and adds to the overall interior space. The Honda sports a VTEC motor that is connected to an automatic transmission. The Insight has some great accessories that can be added onto the base model such as: a Blue Tooth six-speaker sound system, rims, vehicle control assist, F-1 inspired paddle shifters, and a navigation system. The goal of Honda is to make the Insight the top dog in the hybrid market, and this would entail selling more cars then the ever populat Prius.
Opposed to the Insight is the Prius with a 160-hp 1.8L motor has a couple of different driving settings. These 3 modes are the Power Mode which increases the performance of the Prius, the ECO mode which makes fuel economy the #1 proirity, and finally a EV mode which stands for Electric Vehicle. The Pre-Collision system is available as an option on the Prius. This system comes equipped with a radar that constantly measures the distance of the car ahead and presumably adjusts brake pressure when probability of frontal collision is high. The touch sensor system relocates certain buttons onto the steering wheel to lessen driver distraction.
Although the Honda is the cheaper of the hybrid competitors, the Prius has the better fuel efficiency and is noticeably larger than the Insight. The Honda has a reported 40-city mpg, 43-highway, and a combined mpg of 41; while the Prius has mpg of 48-city, 45-highway, and 46 of combined mpg.If you drive over 20,000 miles in a year (with gas costing $2.50 a gallon), owning the Honda would cost $1219 in gas per year and owning a Prius would cost $1086 per year. Rolling around in a Toyota Prius will save over 50 gallons of gas per year as compared to the Honda, but it would take 27 years of driving to recoup the lower cost of the Insight. So although the Prius gets better gas mileage; the Insight overcomes that hurdle by having such a low MSPR!
